Some of the better know names are Rolaids, Tums and Maalox. Most of these are solid bases which have the capacity to neutralize stomache acid. The majority of these commercial products contain the carbonate ion as the active ingredient. The carbonate ion reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form carbonic acid which decomposes to carbon dioxide and water. The antacids differ in the cations present. Some contain sodium carbonate, some calcium carbonate, and some magnesium carbonate. In this lab, we will analyze tums and rolaids to determine their neutralizing power. We will compare their cost and then determine which is the better antacid. Procedure 1. Weigh a whole antacid tsable to the nearest mg and record its mass. 2. Now weigh and place about 25 mg of the finely crushed antacid in 50 mL Erlenmeyer glask and add 20 mL of distilled water. Swirl the flask until the antacid is dissolved. If all of the antacid is not dissolved after 3 to 5 minutes, proceed to tne next step. 3. Add one drop of phenolphathalein solution from afine capillary dropper. The solution may turn light pink at this point due to the presence of the basic antacid. 4. Using a graduated 2 mL pipet, add 2.00 mL of 0.100 M HCl (stomach acid) and stir well until all the remaining solids have dissolved. The solution should be acidic at this point and therefore, colorless. 4. Use a hot plate to heat the solution to boiling for about 5 minutes. (You may notice a fair amount of bubling as carbon dioxide gas is created.) If thesolution turns pink at this point, cool and add 0.5 mL of additional acid. 5. Cool the flask to room temperature by immersing it cold water or running it under cold tap water. 6. Using a microburet, titrate the remaining solution with standardized 0.1 M NaOH. 7. Repeat this procedure for the second antacid. Calculate the moles of HCl added to each antacid: TUMS ROLAIDS 2. Calculate the moles of NaOH used in the titration. TUMS ROLAIDS 3. Calculate the moles of HCl neutralized by the antacid. TUMS ROLAIDS 4. Calculate the neutralizing power of the two antacids (the mL of 0.10M HCl neutralized per gram of antacid). TUMS ROLAIDS 5. Calculate the moles of acid (HCl) neutralized by 1 tablet of antacid: TUMS ROLAIDS 6. COST OF EACH ANTACID (PER TABLET). Analysis 1. Which antacid is a better buy. Explain your conclusion.
