The size of the solute particles in each varies, however, and causes a difference in physical properties. The purpose of this lab is to investigate the differences in physical properties of solutions, colloids and suspensions MATERIALS: water sucrose soluble starch erlenmeyer with clay red food coloring borax cooking oil gelatin test tube of plain gelatin 5 small beakers flash light Procedure 1. Prepare the following solutions: place 25-30 mL of water in 5 of the beakers. Place 1 teaspoon of sucrose into the first beaker, 1 teaspoon of starch into the second, 1 teaspoon of red food coloring into the third, 1 teaspoon of borax into the fourth, and 1 teaspoon of cooking oil into the fifth. Stir each of these. 2. Obtain a test tube of gelatin and the erlenmeyer of clay and water. 3. Observe these seven mixtures and their characteristics. What is the appearance of each mixture after stirring? Which mixtures separate and which remain mixed after stirring? 4. Transfer 10 mL of each mixture that does not separate after stirring to individual test tubes and shine a light on the mixture in a dark room. Is the path of the beam clearly visible in the mixture? (see diagram) 5. Record all of your observations. Return the gelatin and clay. Data SOLUBILITYLIGHT BEAMSUCROSESTARCHCLAYFOOD COLORINGBORAXCOOKING OILGELATIN Analysis Examine your results. Which mixtures are solutions? Suspensions? Colloids? How can you tell? What are their characteristics? How are they alike? How are they different? How can you distinguish solutions, colloids and suspensions from one another?
