Procedure PART I 1. Weigh a paper cup empty. Record the mass. 2. Count out EXACTLY 100 beans of one type, discarding any beans which differ greatly from an average bean. Count it as 10 piles of 10 beans and recheck as you put them into your cup. 3. Mass the cup + 100 beans. Record the total mass. Keep these beans. 4. Determine the mass of the 100 beans. Record this mass. 5. Repeat this procedure with each type of bean provided. 6. Now perform the calculations that follow. Data BEAN #1BEAN #2BEAN #3BEAN #4BEAN #5MASS OF EMPTY CUP (G)MASS OF CUP + BEANS (G)MASS OF 100 BEANS (G)AVERAGE MASS OF 1 BEAN (G)RELATIVE MASS OF BEAN (G) Calculations 1. Calculate the average mass of each type of bean and record it. 2. Calculate the RELATIVE MASS of each type of bean. Relative mass compares the mass of each bean to the lightest bean; that is, it determines how much heavier each bean is than the lightest bean. RELATIVE MASS = AVERAGE MASS OF BEAN AVERAGE MASS OF LIGHTEST BEAN Procedure PART I 1. When you have completed the calculations, take the relative mass of one bean and set the riders on the balance to that weight in grams. Now place enough of those beans on the balance until the balance balances. Now, COUNT the NUMBER of beans on the balance. RECORD THE NUMBER OF BEANS ON THE BALANCE. 2. Repeat this procedure for all other beans. 3. Check the data tables of other students to see what they got for the number of beans of each type when they mass out the relative mass in grams.. 4. Calculate the average number of beans in the relative mass of all beans.. DATA PART II BEAN #1BEAN #2BEAN #3BEAN #4BEAN #5NUMBER OF BEANS IN A RELATIVE MASS MEASURED IN GRAMS Analysis 1.
