Your mission is to calculate the exact amounts of each chemical needed for the reaction and to mass out exactly the correct amounts. Your TASKS are as follows: To react sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H20) in EXACTLY the correct amounts, Filter the precipitate, and Test the filtrate using phenolphtalein. You have been successful when the filtrate is colorless and there is no pink color when phenolthalein is added. MATERIALS 2 pellets of sodium hydroxide copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate ring stand filter funnel filter paper phenolphtalein beakers stirring rods Procedure To begin the lab, obtain 2 pellets of NaOH from your teacher. You will be told the weight of the two pellets. This is your starting point. Calculate the amount of copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate needed to react with the mass of sodium hydroxide you have been given. 3. When you have finished your calculations, you must then decide on a procedure for the lab that will accomplish the stated tasks. Do the lab. When you have isolated your precipitate, call the teacher over to test the filtrate. If too much copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate was used, the filtrate will be blue. If too much sodium hydroxide is used, the filtrate will turn pink when a drop of phenolphalein indicator is added. If the chemicals have been reacted in exactly the correct amounts, the filtrate will be colorless, there will be no pink color when phenolphtalein is added. 5. WORDS OF CAUTION: NaOH is a strong base and can cause burns. DO NOT PICK THE PELLETS UP WITH YOUR FINGERS. USE A SPATULA OR TWEEZERS. 6. You will have 5 attempts to react sodium hydroxide and copper (II) sulfate hydrate in the correct amounts. You will be scored as follows: a. 1st trial is successful 40 points b. 2nd trial is successful 38 points c. 3rd trial is successful 36 points d. 4th trial is successful 34 points e. 5th trial is successful 32 points 7. If you are successful, you need to turn in only your data and calculations. 8. If you are unsuccessful after 5 trials, you need to turn in your data and calculations AND a discussion of why your experiment failed and what you could do to make it successful. Data and Calculations You need to decide on what data is appropriate to present .
