The Patterns in Nature workshops have 1) introduced and prepared teachers to use the materials developed by preceding projects funded by the Applications of Advanced Technology Program, 2) prepared teachers for new roles as mentors in a cooperative learning classroom environment in which students learn the science from interaction with their peers, with experiments, and with the computer rather than exclusively from the teacher, 3) identified potential "leaders" and work with them to develop their expertise as resource agents for colleagues in their home regions, and 4) prepared an online teacher's resource book and leader's training kit for their use.
