--------------------------------------------------------------------------- CPS SYSTEM UPGRADE PLAN FEB-99 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- % THIS FILE HAS BEEN MODIFIED ON FEB-2000 TO INDICATE WHAT WAS ACTUALLY DONE. THESE NEW COMMENTS ARE DILINEATED BY %%% The time has come where we absolutely need to upgrade our machines. The reasons why we need to do this are as follows: - There is currently NO consistency in what is available on each machine. This makes it difficult from a user's perspective (they cannot easily use our machines) and from system admin (it's like managing a hodge podge of stuff). - Our machines are clearly not Year 2000 compliant. We cannot be certain that our machines will even work past the Y2K. - Removing the dependency on shared filesystems decreases network traffic. - Old OS's are inherently insecure. IT will not put such machines on the net. In principle, upgraded machines will be able to connect to the outside. The problem with upgrading, is that the new operating systems take up more disk than we currently have available. So, to upgrade most of our machines, requires new disks. What follows is a list of each platform IN THE ORDER THAT THE UPGRADES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN and the upgrades we are planning. Please send questions, comments, or suggestions to: sysadmin@argento - Paul/Luis/F --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SGI Indy MIPS R4600 (arkady, bailey, jhilad, daneel, trantor, seldon) * note: there are no upgrades needed for the R3000 Indigo machines washington and rushmore, which cannot be upgraded beyond IRIX 5.3. Currently, /usr/local is on seldon (shared by all machines). These machines currently have 500MB hard disks, with the exception of daneel and seldon which have 3G. They are all running 6.2, with the exception of jhilad which is running 5.x. This will accomplish: a major OS upgrade on our biggest platform; upgrade of /usr/local; and MOST IMPORTANTLY, transfer of our YP services (passwords) to a more modern platform. When: February Upgrades to do: - we have already repaired hardware problems in arkady and jhilad. - all machines should get 9G drives (we currently bought 3 such drives for bailey, arkady, and jhilad; we will need an additional 3 drives to accomplish this). - install IRIX 6.5.3. - put /usr/local on seldon and install freeware: ghostscript, netscape, realaudio, xmgr, xmol, mathematica, pine/elm, rasmol, xv, gimp, xfig, etc... check out: http://www.sgi.com/fun/freeware/web.html - make jhilad and arkady our YP master and slave, respectively. rename to miranda and ariel. - update info for SGI users, see http://scv.bu.edu/SCV/scf-new.html %%% /usr/local is on seldon, however, many shareware programs are available through BU's AFS filesystem. %%% Jhilad is renamed to macduff. Arkady and bailey are the YP slave and master. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SGI Onyx 2-MIPS R10000 (linda) When: February Upgrade will occur before argento gets done and consist of: - software upgrade to 6.5.3 - additional 512K memory upgrade (total would be 768M) - additional 36G 10000RPM cheeta drives (THIS WILL OCCUR LATER!) - DAT backup tape, internal (THIS MAY OCCUR LATER!) %%% Added 1G of memory, bringing total to 1.256G. 18G Seagate drive. No DAT backup tape. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SGI Indigo2 MIPS R8000 (argento) * this machine provides our outside services (ftp, telnet, http server, mail server). When: THIS WORK WILL BE DONE DURING THE WEEK EVERYONE IS AWAY AT MRS MEETING IN ATLANTA, BECAUSE OF THE DISRUPTED SERVICES. Upgrades to do: - add a 9GB drive. - unfortunately, because there is only a 1G root partition, we will need to reformat the disk in order to install 6.5.3. - additional 256M memory total = 384M - possible external DAT %%% No additional memory added (total is 128M). No ext. DAT. Added 100MBPS Ethernet card. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alpha 3000/400 (malcolm) When: target is end of March/early April Upgrades to do: - only a 1GB disk, will need to add a 9GB disk. - upgrade to Tru64 and latest freeware releases - update info for DEC users, see http://scv.bu.edu/SCV/scf-new.html %%% NO upgrades done. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DEC 500AU Alpha (darmok, hober, ceres, risa, juno) When: target is end of March/early April Upgrades to do: - upgrade to Tru64 operating system including latest freeware releases %%% All upgraded to Digital Unix 4.0D in Jan-2000 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alpha 3000/500 (duncan) When: target is end of April Upgrades to do: - first, temporarily move /users/duncan to another machine. - replace all 4 1GB disks with 2 (or more) 9GB disks. - possibly increase memory - upgrade to Tru64 %%% NO upgrades done. Experienced no Y2K problems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM RS6000 RETIREMENTS When: May/June - retire water. Water currently supports /usr/local for the rest of the IBM's; this is not needed anymore. RIGHT NOW, if water breaks it shuts down all other IBM's and effects the network. So, we should work to remove it. - retire riskit. It is incredibly slow and nobody ever uses it and it barely works; crashes regularly. We can keep the monitors from both to use in case other machine's monitor's breakdown. %%% Both machines have been retired. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM RS6000/360 (clio, thalia, erato) - replace disks with 9GB disks in each. - possibly increase memory - upgrade to AIX 4.x %%% Thalia has been retired. No upgrades to the other machines. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DEC ULTRIX (miranda, ariel, eiger2, iris, caliban) There are NO upgrades available for our old DEC Ultrix boxes. These include miranda, ariel, eiger2 (gene's office), iris, caliban. Miranda and ariel's services as NIS master/slave (e.g., passwords) will be given to two SGI Indy's running 6.5.3. %%% Miranda and ariel became slaves on DEC-99. There were no upgrades done, and no machines experienced any Y2K problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
