			NOTICE TO ALL CPS USERS

As you all probably know, many essential services have been transferred
from miranda to argento and that argento is currently our only machine
fully connected to the outside world.

This message summarizes some of the main changes that have taken place
and will tell you what you need to do:

o CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD. Because of the security
breach, currently only argento is connected to the Internet.
This is the only machine that can use services like ftp and
telnet to hosts outside of CPS. Note: the reverse is also
true. If you are dialing into BU from home, argento is the
only machine you can telnet into. Once inside argento, you
can telnet to any other CPS machine.

o CPS WEBSERVER (http://polymer.bu.edu). The Web server has
been moved to argento and is now running the latest version
of the Apache Web server. There are currently several
small problems all of which are being worked out.

o POLYMER.BU.EDU. This is the new alias to argento. If you
telnet to this address, access the Web site through this
address, or send mail to a user at this address, it has the
same effect as using argento.bu.edu. You may want to use
@polymer.bu.edu as your email address you give
out to people. You should also use this as the address for
	  the CPS WEB SITE.

o MAIL: the mail server has been moved from miranda to argento.
after several days of debugging, we believe that sendmail
is now somewhat stable. Now when you read your mail
on any machine (using mail, pine, elm), you are actually
reading your mailbox which is located on argento. The
changeover should be, more or less, transparent to you.
However, there are some things you should be aware of:
	  	1) sending mail from the IBMs is not stable and
		   should be avoided!
		2) you can send mail from argento, but keep in mind
that emacs is not currently installed there. All
other machines currently seem to send mail fine.
		3) all aliases should work as they did before (i.e.,
cps will go to all cps users). However, please
note that many guest users have had their
accounts deactivated. So, you should send to
them directly wherever they are now.
To see all the mail aliases, log onto argento
		   and type

cpsmail -l (this will list all the aliases)

cpsmail -p (will list all the recipients
		   				 of that mail list)

cpsmail (will tell you all the lists you
					 are in)

	   	4) mail sent from the outside to ANY machine will get to
you okay. Though, when you give your email to
people outside BU, it would be best to give your
		   @bu.edu address or @polymer.bu.edu
		   address.

o OLD MAILBOXES. If you have mail in your old mailbox it will
still be there on miranda. To get to it, log onto miranda,
	  type

		cp /usr/spool/mail_old/ .

This will put your old mailbox in your home directory.

o CONNECTION TO LEGO. Despite the restriction on outside
connections, we have established a direct connection between
CPS and LEGO from all of our machines. This means that
you can open display a window from LEGO onto any of our
   	  machines.

o CONNECTION TO THE WEB. A proxy server has been installed
on argento. This allows you to run netscape on any of our
machines and receive http streams through the proxy server.
Navigator is NOT installed on any of the Ultrix boxes (i.e.,
miranda, ariel, caliban, iris), the IBMs, or on Argento. So,
to access the Web, open netscape on any machine other than
those listed above, and do the following one-time setup.

	  To launch netscape, type netscape.

If you are on any of the SGI's, netscape v4 will launch.
Click on EDIT and PREFERENCES menu. Click on ADVANCED,
PROXIES. Click on MANUAL PROXY CONFIGURATION, VIEW. In the
HTTP Proxy field, type argento.bu.edu and for the port field,
type 3128. Click OK. Now you should be all set.

If you are on the the Alphas, running netscape will launch
version 3 (currently version 4 is not available for Digital
Unix 4) you can configure the proxy server by clicking on
OPTIONS, NETWORK PREFERENCES, PROXIES. Then continue as above
(by clicking on Manual proxy config, etc).

o LATEX. Latex currently is available ONLY on the new alphas
(darmok, ceres, risa, hober). Note that ghostview and xdvi
are now also working on these machines.

o PASSWORDS. Please make sure your passwords are good ones.
This means that they should NOT be a word (in any language)
so as to not be easily cracked. They should also contain
at least one change of case (i.e., upper and lower case letters)
and at least one number. If you have an ACS/PPP password
through BU (a Kerberos password), you should consider
changing your password on the CPS machines to the same
as your ACS/PPP password. To change your password, type

			yppasswd

Though we do not check to make sure your password is a good
one at the time you change your password, we will be checking
	  regularly.

You can help us IMMENSELY by notifying us of any bugs or offering any
suggestions. Obviously, we cannot easily debug everything ourselves and
it takes all of you users to help find any bugs for us.

Please send mail to

When appropriate, we will make changes to this information file and send
it to all CPS users.
